Santa María la Mayor Church (18th century) was built from an already exisiting church that dated back to the start of the 16th century. This one, in turn, was erected upon a Muslim mosque. It has just one nave and its appearance has a certain similarity to other temples in the area, standing out for its slender tower. Inside, an image of the Virgen de la Cabeza stands out; it was handed down from the Catholic King and Queen towards the end of the 15th century. Located in the Medio neighbourhood, it has been the principal focus of the city until not long ago.
